DHA for Horses

Humans aren’t the only ones who benefit from adequate levels of DHA in their diets. Recent research suggests that supplementing horses with DHA can provide many of the same benefits associated with DHA supplementation in humans.

Did you know?

  • There are three major types of omega-3s: ALA, EPA and DHA. ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), most commonly found in flax, and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), found in fish oil, are not direct sources of DHA.
  • Horses, especially those who receive supplemental grain as part of their daily ration, may have adequate levels of ALA in their diet.  However, it is the long chain omega-3s, including DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), that provide many of the benefits owners and trainers are looking for in horse feeds, supplements and treats.

Benefits of DHAgoldTM

  • Most animals are inefficient at converting ALA and EPA into DHA and benefit from a preformed source of DHA such as DHAgold.
  • Recent studies have highlighted the benefits of DHA/EPA supplementation in horses recovering from strenuous exercise as well as the benefits of DHA/EPA for horse reproductive health.
  • DHAgold is a preformed source of DHA from a vegetarian source – algae.

Feeding DHAgold

DHAgold  is a flowable, dried algae flake that can be easily blended or extruded into most horse feed formulations or top dressed on the horses regular feed.
